Derrick Breidenthal (b. 1971, Kansas City; lives and works in Kansas City) is an abstract painter whose work explores the relationship between the observing subject and the world around them. Inspired by the vast landscapes of the American midwest, his work draws on the metaphor of horizons as both external boundaries beyond which we cannot see as well as internal barriers below which we choose not to feel. By reaching below the surface of our personal psyches through his atmospheric compositions and stretching out beyond the limits of our perception, Briedenthal’s work creates a channel for personal actualization through paint.
Breidenthal has exhibited extensively in the US and his paintings are widely collected across the country and abroad. In 2021, Breidenthal received his first solo museum exhibition at the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art.

“I create paintings rooted in moments of discomfort, fear, and stress. Then I reshape the paintings into expressions of strength, empathy, and resilience.”
